Have you ever created a new document by copying an existing one and making some tweaks? If so, you know that this process can be error-prone and time-consuming. However, Microsoft 365 has recently introduced a new feature called content assembly that aims to solve these issues.

Content assembly is part of SharePoint Syntax and allows users to create a template for a Word document that can be filled out by users in the form of a “form” and then merged into a new document. It’s similar to a modern mail merge. To use content assembly, you need a SharePoint Syntax license.

To create a modern template, you can upload a document and select it as the base for your template. Next, you can use the template studio to add placeholders that will be filled out by users. There are several types of placeholders to choose from, including single or multiple lines of text, numbers, dates, times, emails, or hyperlinks. You can even connect a placeholder to a column in an existing SharePoint list or document library.

Once you’ve created your template, you can save it as a draft or publish it. When you publish it, it will appear as an option under the “New” button. When a user selects the template, they’ll be presented with the document and the fields they need to fill out on the right-hand side. The data they enter will be merged into the document where the placeholders are.

Content assembly is a great feature that can save you time and reduce errors when creating new documents.
